A Message from
Chris Smith, Executive Director |
First, I want to thank Andy McCreanor and Frankie Hughart
for their terrific work on behalf of Clermont 20/20. Andy has
provided exemplary leadership, stewardship, and business
acumen over the past 18 months in guiding and directing
Clermont 20/20. We wish him well in his new role and
responsibilities at Executive Service Corps. We will continue
to be the beneficiary of Andy's expertise in his new
consultative role. Frankie Hughart has been the
operational and administrative "glue" that has held the
organization together for a long time. Her dedication, work
ethic, and superior customer service skills have provided
Clermont 20/20 with a smooth running business platform.
Frankie has served as the long time face and voice of Clermont
20/20. Thank you Frankie, for your time and talent and
willingness to volunteer extra hours in assistance during this
transition period. Clermont 20/20 is embracing a
renewed focus on leadership training and development. This
includes not only the extensive introduction to Clermont
County functions, institutions, and operations, but a greater
emphasis on honing leadership skills as well as substantial
networking development. To that end we are assembling our
Leadership Class for 2011. We have an excellent group thus
far. Additional class participants are welcomed and
encouraged. We look forward to the continuation
of our successful Look To Leadership program involving our
high school students from districts throughout Clermont
County. The Look program provides an excellent springboard for
building the kind of leadership skills necessary for the next
generation that will guide Clermont County into the
future. Our Clermont Educational Opportunities
(CEO) program continues to be an integral part of the Clermont
20/20 array of services. College Access Advisors are in each
of the participating schools and work with seniors and their
families to motivate, present, and encourage students to
pursue postsecondary educational options. This program
provides a valuable support function providing data and detail
on admissions processes, financial aid applications, and
scholarship opportunities. Our Clean n Green
programs continue to provide timely and needed service. The
coordination and facilitation of groups and individual
volunteers taking the time to clean up their neighborhood
roadways, parking lots, parks, river, streams, and creeks adds
a positive element to our quality of life in Clermont
County. I am pleased to step into the interim
executive director role here at Clermont 20/20 as we move into
our next decade of service to Clermont County following 20
years of previous service, support, training, and leadership
development guided by a wonderful array of community
volunteers, staff, and board members who have selflessly
donated their time, talent and treasure to this fine
organization.

Volunteers Needed
for River Cleanup |
For The Ohio River needs you! On
Saturday, June 19th from 9am - Noon the Clermont 20/20 Clean
and Green Program and ORSANCO (Ohio River Valley Water
Sanitation Commission) are hosting the 21th annual Ohio River
Sweep. Volunteers are needed to remove trash and debris
from the Ohio River shoreline, riverbank and river
tributaries. Four riverfront staging areas have been
established in Clermont County: Chilo Lock #34 Park - older
children and adult volunteers only due to rough terrain,
Neville - Indian Mound Campground, Moscow - Riverfront Park
(222 Second Street) and in New Richmond at the riverfront
Bandstand. Large items and tires removed during the Ohio
River Sweep can be dropped off at the Meldahl Lock and Dam
parking lot. "In 2009, more than 21,000 people
volunteered to collect trash and debris from the river
banks. ORSANCO hopes River Sweep 2010 will be even more
succesful," stated Jeanne Ison, ORSANCO Project Manager.
Becky Ploucha, Clermont 20/20 Clean and Green Program
Director, added, "Removing the litter and debris enhances both
the water quality and wildlife potential. It is a great
opportunity for volunteers to play an active role in improving
the environment in the Ohio River Valley." River
Sweep, sponsored regionally by ORSANCO and its partners and
locally by the Adams-Clermont Solid Waste District and the
Clermont County Office of Environmental Quality, is an annual
riverbank cleanup that has grown to one of the largest cleanup
efforts of its kind. This year 3,000 miles of shoreline
from Pittsburgh, PA to Cairo, IL will be cleaned
up. Volunteers will receive free t-shirts,
gloves, bags and refreshments. Volunteers are encouraged to
dress appropriately for the weather, do not wear open-toed
shoes and avoid poison ivy by wearing long pants and long
sleeved shirts.

Ploucha, Clermont 20/20 Clean and Green Program Director, at

Clermont 20/20
Awards Last Dollar Grants |
Once again this year, Clermont 20/20, Inc.'s college
access program, Clermont Educational Opportunities, has
awarded Last Dollar Grants to students who have demonstrated
financial need as well as a strong desire to continue their
education after high school. This is the ninth year that
Clermont 20/20's college access program has awarded the
scholarships to students at each partnering school.
"Every year we award two $500 scholarships to
graduating seniors at each of the Clermont County schools that
participate in our college access program" explained Nancy
Hall, director of the college access program. This year,
Clermont Educational Opportunities presented fourteen Last
Dollar Grant awards at the Senior Awards ceremonies held at
the high schools. "We are excited to have the opportunity
to be able to award grants to these amazing
students. Each one of them has a story to tell and we are
honored to be a small part of their story." In addition to the
$500 grants given out in May, the recipients are now eligible
for consideration in a second round of award selection in June
where one student will win an additional scholarship of
$3,500. Clermont Educational Opportunities
raises these scholarship funds through an annual fundraiser
with all of the money raised going directly toward the Last
Dollar Grants. For this year's fundraiser, Clermont 20/20
held its First Annual Cornhole Tournament during the Taste of
Clermont event in September. The event helped raise $14,000
for scholarships. "The Cornhole Tournament was fun for
everyone," said Hall. Because the event was so well
received, Clermont 20/20 is planning their Second Annual
Cornhole Tournament at this year's Taste of Clermont event on
Friday, September 10th. For more
information about the Clermont Educational Opportunities
college access program and ways you can help support the Last
Dollar Grant Scholarship Fund contact Nancy Hall at Clermont
20/20, Inc at 513-753-9222.
Congratulations to all of our Last Dollar
Grant recipients!

Leadership
Alumni News & Events |
As a graduate from a Clermont 20/20, Inc.
leadership program, if you have an announcement you
would like to share please send your information to officemgr@clermont2020.org.
This effort is brought to you
by the LEAD Class of 2008.
LEAD Clermont Class
of 2007 Member, Glenn Welling to speak at June
Chamber Luncheon
On Friday, June 11 at Receptions Eastgate, Mr.
Glenn Welling, Acting Executive Director for the
Department of Defense's Yellow Ribbon Program,
will present an overview of the Yellow
Ribbon Program and how it helps National Guard and
Reserve Service members and their families overcome
challenges associated with combat
deployments. The Yellow Ribbon Program gives
Service members and their families the opportunity to
connect with resources, information, and benefits
before they deploy, when they're deployed, and after
they return home.
One of the most critical challenges facing
returning Service members is employment. In 2008, the
Pentagon reported that over 10% of the National Guard
and Reserve members were unable to return to their
civilian jobs they held before deploying, in spite of
the protective provisions in federal law. The
problem is especially common among those employed by
small businesses: Veterans for America found that some
small businesses avoid hiring citizen soldiers.
Almost 20% of recent veterans are unemployed, and 25%
of those who are employed earn less than $21,000 per
year. Welling will offer insight on the
readiness, relevancy, and experience of the 1.1
million National Guard and Reserve Service members and
how they add value to the American work force.
Glenn has drilled with the Navy Reserve for
almost 30 years, and deployed in June 2008 to Iraq,
where his mission involved detainee operations at
Camps Bucca and Taji. He assumed the position of
Deputy Executive Director for Department of Defense
Yellow Ribbon Program in January 2010, and currently
serves as the Acting Exective Director. Mr.
Welling brings first-hand knowledge and military
experience in deployment-related issues facing the
National Guard and Reserve to his position. Register
by calling 513-576-5000 or online at www.clermontchamber.com.
Morgan Sperry (Look to Clermont
2010) was an All-Fort Ancient Valley Conference
first team selection who has committed to
play basketball for Ohio Northern University. She
led the Lady Barons in scoring this season, averaging
15.2 points and 11.2 rebounds per game. She also led the
team in assists.
Seth Varner (Look to Clermont 2010)
committed to play baseball at Miami University. The
left-hander helped Clermont Northeastern win the
Southern Buckeye Conference American Division title in
April and advance as the No. 1 seed in the Division III
sectional tournament.
Louie Schaljo (Look to Clermont
2009) was selected by the Ohio High School
Basketball Coaches Association as an Academic All-Ohio
player for Division II during this past season. He
played basketball for Bethel-Tate High School.

Third Annual Concert to Benefit
Literacy
Local musicians join together to raise
money & awareness to tackle the epidemic affecting 1
in 4 Clermont/Brown adults Toe-tapping
chamber music will fill the sanctuary of St. John Fisher
Church, 3227 Church Street in Newtown on Sunday,
June 6, 2010 as Suzanne Bona and friends
perform a concert to benefit The Literacy Council of
Clermont and Brown Counties. Bona, a trained flutist and
classical music broadcaster, has assembled a group of
prominent area performers, all donating their talents
and time, to raise money to combat adult
illiteracy. Joining Bona for the 3:00 p.m.
concert are guitarist Richard Goering, flutist Margaret
Fecker, violinist Nancy Illman and cellist Jennifer
Higgins Wheatley. Also performing is the Cellar SaxBand,
whose members are Paula Pease playing soprano and alto
sax, Ken Poleyeff on alto sax, Ken Foltz playing tenor
sax and Joe Phelps on baritone sax. This
year's concert - the 3rd annual benefit -- will feature
the widest variety of music yet, from traditional
classical music, to sultry Latin American dances, to
upbeat jazz favorites. An Anderson Township
resident, Suzanne Bona is a board member of The Literacy
Council of Clermont and Brown Counties and a veteran
literacy tutor. She has recruited friends from Anderson,
Wyoming, Deerfield Township and Fort Thomas to perform
with her and raise funds needed to continue the vital
work of The Literacy Council. All proceeds
of the event will go to the Literacy Council of Clermont
& Brown Counties. There is no admission charge, but
there is a suggested minimum donation of $15 per
person. According to Literacy Council
Executive Director Susan Vilardo, "It's shocking, but
approximately one out of four adults in Clermont and
Brown Counties cannot read and write beyond a third
grade level. If this were a health issue, it would be
considered an 'epidemic.'" Vilardo continues, "Can you
imagine being unable to read to your kids, fill out a
job application, or comprehend the instructions and
warnings on a prescription bottle?" Board President
Jason Sims adds, "It takes great courage for adults to
admit they can't read and ask for help. The Literacy
Council helps people overcome their shame and improve
their lives by matching them with one-on-one volunteer
tutors. Their personal successes benefit our community
as they develop skills to support their
families." The Literacy Council's mission
is to enable adults to acquire basic listening,
speaking, reading and writing skills needed to
participate fully in society, and to increase awareness
of literacy needs in our community. For more
information please call Susan Vilardo at 513-943-3741 or
email Suzanne Bona at sbona@wshu.org.
Eighteenth Annual Spelling
Bee
Three person adult teams will gather on
June 22, 2010 at noon to
determine, without a shadow of a doubt, what team is the
best speller. Fifteen to twenty teams will
participate in this year's Literacy Spelling Bee.
The teams are comprised of agencies and businesses from
Clermont and Brown Counties. Most of the teams are
returning competitors and some of the teams are
"new-bees." The Literacy Council
gets a lot of mileage from the event. Not only do
all of the proceeds funnel into services that assist
adults into becoming veracious readers for the very
first time but the agency has taken "bee-ountiful"
license with the very word "bee." We find
ourselves drawn to any picture, item or expression that
bears a bee! We are bee-yond ourselves over
the bee! In a sense, we have "bee-it is!"
But we find this to bee a very "bee-utiful" habit.
(We know how nerve-wracking this must bee!!!)
So, "bee" a good sport and come on out and
cheer for those courageous and talented team members as
they spell words far more difficult than
"beecareful." The last team standing wins a gold
medal and a prize. The affair runs for two hours
or so. There is complimentary food and drinks
("bee" nice and don't take too much) a raffle, split the
pot and a silent auction. Enjoy a great
afternoon of skilled spellers, incredibly difficult
words, and tempting items to bid on. In the end,
you will have helped the Literacy Council to continue
with their mission of helping adults learn how to read.
Bee a strong supporter. Bee at the
Bee. |
