LEAD Clermont Class of 2010
Learn About the Role of Education in Leadership
Education Day for the LEAD Class was hosted by UC
Clermont College on November 5th. Dr. Jim McDonough,
Dean of the College, updated the class about UC Clermont's
enrollment, course offerings and growth and noted that the
college is the third largest college in the University of
Cincinnati system. Dr. Vicki Hammer, Associate Dean for
Academic Affairs, served as the advisor for the day and LEAD
class members Nikki Vargas and Andy Baker were class day
planners. The day began with a presentation from
Steve Heck a faculty member with Milford Junior High School,
who was selected in 2008 to be an astronaut in NASA's
Teachers in Space Program. He is scheduled to journey into
space in 2011. In addition to telling the class about his
training and preparation for his space flight, Steve spoke
about the role of education in leadership and the impact it
has on the lives of others. He spoke about heroes today and
the importance for people and leaders to dream their big
dream. He emphasized that leaders must work constantly toward
achieving goals with and through others realizing that it
takes dedication, risk taking, continuing education,
commitment and motivation to do so. Bruce Davis,
Assistant Professor for Legal Studies at UC Clermont, spoke on
the Student Response System and the use of technology designed
to create an engaging and inviting environment to maximize
students' active learning. Tim Nolan, Director of the Greater
Cincinnati Tech Prep Consortium, discussed how technology is
playing an increasing role, especially for first generation
College students, in getting them prepared for success in
college. Blaine Kelley, Senior Enrollment Advisor at UC
Clermont guided a tour of the campus for the LEAD class and
gave additional details about UC Clermont's degree and
certificate programs and presented a cost comparison about the
value of a student attending the Batavia campus. Barbara
Wallace, Director of College Success, presented 'Service
Learning 101'and how service learning leads to activism.
Barbara Bradley, Superintendent of Batavia Local School
District, discussed 'Ohio Public School Finance' and the
financial challenges of providing a high quality education
experience for students. For the day, LEAD class
members commented that they learned how many different
programs we have in the county centered on education and the
need for higher education. Other comments included urging
children to continue to learn and learning more about how
class members' respective school districts are using
funds.
Look to Clermont Students Gather
at the Sheriff's Office
In November, 26 students from 14 of our local high
schools who have been participating in a unique nine month
leadership program designed to educate and prepare them to be
future community leaders gathered at the Sheriff's Office to
learn about Clermont County's Government and Infrastructure
system. Thanks to many county employees, government
representatives and officials the students left this day with
a greater education of our county.

Mentoring |
"Woody" Breyer visits
Williamsburg High School's Mentor Members
On November 24, 2009 members of the Mentoring Program at
Williamsburg High School enjoyed a visit from Daniel "Woody"
Breyer, Clermont County Assistant Prosecuting Attorney.
During his discussion, Breyer focused on several teen issues,
including laws for minors versus laws for adults, laws
governing incidents that occur on social media internet sites,
and answered questions from the group. The
Mentoring Program of Clermont 20/20, Inc. works with students
in school districts including Williamsburg, Live Oaks, CNE,
Loveland, and Batavia. Mentors meet with an assigned
group of 10-15 students each week throughout the school year,
to help the teens stay focused on reaching goals in their
lives that will ultimately lead to graduation. For more
information on how to become a mentor, please call Terri
Rechtin, Mentoring Coordinator at 513-753-9222.

Recycling
Opportunities Expanded by
Rumpke
"60% of the materials that end up in the landfill
could have been recycled." according to Hannah Lubbers
of the Clermont County Office of Environmental
Quality. And Rumpke is making it even more
convenient to recycle by expanding the types of
recyclables accepted in curbside and drop-off bin
recycling programs.
Becky Ploucha, Clermont 20/20 Clean and Green
Program Director, encourages residents and businesses to
take advantage of all recycling opportunities. "By
recycling, you help save energy, preserve natural
resources, conserve landfill space and help the
economy." stated Ploucha.
Acceptable Rumpke recycling items continue to
include: glass bottles and jars, plastic bottles with
lids removed, empty aerosol cans with lids and tips
removed, aluminum and steel cans, paper, brown
grocery bags, envelopes with or without windows,
corrugated cardboard broken down to 3' X 3", telephone
books, magazines, junk mail, paperboard such as cereal
boxes, and newspapers with inserts. Items NOT accepted
include: plastics that are not bottles (Cool Whip
containers, butter/margarine tubs, yogurt containers),
plastic bags, motor oil jugs or other chemical
containers, Styrofoam, lids/caps, window or drinking

We wish

20/20 a Happy Birthday !!!
Happy
Birthday Sagittarians! (November 22 -
December 21) Sagittarians possess a natural
exuberance, sense of adventure and love of life that
makes them one of the most optimistic zodiac signs of
all. Like their astrological symbol - the Archer -
Sagittarians are renowned for aiming their sights
towards whatever it is they find alluring. They believe
that anything is possible. Sagittarians are happiest on
the move - exploring new cultures and ideas and many are
attracted to occupations related to travel, the media,
outdoor work, and philosophical pursuits.
December 3 - Our very own, Nancy
Hall, Clermont 20/20 December 14 -
Dennis Conger, LIVE Clermont
Class of 2009
Happy Birthday Capricorns!
(December 22 - January 19) Capricorns are
patient and persevering. They reach their goals because
they know the longest journey commences with a single
step and that the first step is always the most
difficult. Continually climbing the eternal mountain of
success, Capricornians rise to the occasion when faced
with a new task or deadline. Even if something comes to
a grinding halt, their ambition to reach the ultimate
keeps them moving forever onwards and upwards. Although
conservative and cautious, Capricorns are willing to try
unusual approaches on their road to success in business
or in love.

Community
Development News |
- Every year, more than $300 billion in federal
funds are awarded to states and communities based on
census data. That's more than $3 trillion distributed
over a 10-year period.
- Census data guide local decision-makers in
important community planning efforts, including where
to build new road, hospitals and schools.
- Census data affect your voice in Congress. The
census determines how many seats each state will have
in the U.S. House of Representatives as well as the
redistricting of state legislatures, county and city
councils, and voting districts.
As a
2010 Census partner, it is Clermont 20/20's
goal to combine the strengths of local
governments, community-based organizations, faith-based
organizations, schools, media, businesses and others, to
ensure a complete and accurate 2010 Census!
The Census Bureau will provide promotional
materials, regular updates and data assistance to
partners to assist in this effort. To get involved and
support the 2010 Census go to: 2010.census.gov/2010census.
