It's June and
Time for LEAD Clermont 2010 |
| |
 |
Andy
McCreanor Executive
Director
Each June for the past 16 years, a new LEAD
Clermont class has been formed with the idea that
individuals from different sectors of Clermont County
could come together, learn from each other, apply their
leadership knowledge or develop it, and gain a
perspective of Clermont County's assets, issues and
challenges. This month, Clermont 20/20 will be
forming the Class of 2010, its 17th.
As of Wednesday June 3rd, I am pleased to
announce that we have 17 new members for the Class of
2010, and nine spots remaining. The deadline for
submitting your application is Monday, June 15th. You
can complete an application form online at http://www.clermont2020.org/cli/lead. Final
selection of the class will be announced Tuesday, June
30th with orientation scheduled for Thursday, July
9th. Now that we have covered the process,
I wanted to spend a few lines talking about the Value
the LEAD program delivers to its customers. As a LEAD
graduate myself, and especially now as the Executive
Director of 20/20, I find myself remembering the quality
points I got from my class days in 1997. It's important
because I'm constantly presenting the Value Proposition
when I meet others and am asked about what people get
out of LEAD, and the benefit to businesses and
organizations sending people through the Class.
Here are some of the key points that come
to mind for me, and a few more from which I got a
benefit after thinking about them. Without question, the
quick ones are; the network building, (an unbelievable
bonding experience), being around people from all
sectors (business, government, education, and
organizations) of the community, and gaining an
understanding of Clermont County's culture, condition
and circumstances. Additional key points
for me were listening (and understanding) the
perspectives of class members when they were not in sync
with mine, and still having to work together to find a
solution to a problem during a team exercise. I learned
that understanding team dynamics beginning with my own
skill sets and ego was a critical part of accomplishing
something great together. I learned about taking
risks and accepting responsibility, and from a
leadership perspective, to take initiative when it might
be difficult to do so. I learned that things change and
that a leader must be forthright and resilient enough to
set a tone and a direction for others. Most of
all, I learned about myself and that being a good
citizen is important to all of us. I'm sure
going through LEAD has meant different things to the
Leaders who have graduated from the program. So I won't
try to convince you the quality points I've mentioned
constitute the official Value Proposition of LEAD
Clermont. But when you think about it, these are some
great reasons to invest the time and effort in helping
to build a better and stronger Clermont County. If not
You....WHO? If not
Now....When? Consider joining the Class of
2010 today! |

Volunteers
Needed for River Cleanup |

 The
Ohio River needs you! On Saturday, June 20th from
9am - Noon the Clermont 20/20 Clean and Green Program
and ORSANCO (Ohio River Valley Water Sanitation
Commission) are hosting the 20th annual Ohio River
Sweep. Volunteers are needed to remove trash and
debris from the Ohio River shoreline, riverbank and
river tributaries. Four riverfront staging areas have
been established in Clermont County: Chilo Lock #34 Park
- older children and adult volunteers only due to rough
terrain, Neville - Indian Mound Campground, Moscow -
Village Hall and in New Richmond at the riverfront
Bandstand. Large items and tires removed during
the Ohio River Sweep can be dropped off at the Meldahl
Lock and Dam parking lot. River Sweep,
sponsored regionally by ORSANCO and its partners and
locally by the Adams-Clermont Solid Waste District and
the Clermont County Office of Environmental Quality, is
an annual riverbank cleanup that has grown to one of the
largest cleanup efforts of its kind. This year
3,000 miles of shoreline from Pittsburgh, PA to Cairo,
IL will be cleaned up. Volunteers will
receive free t-shirts, gloves, bags and refreshments.
Volunteers are encouraged to dress appropriately for the
weather, do not wear open-toed shoes and avoid poison
ivy by wearing long pants and long sleeved
shirts. For additional information, please
contact Becky Ploucha, Clermont 20/20 Clean and Green
Program Director, at cleanandgreen@clermont2020.org or

The LEAD Clermont Class of 2009 Leadership Day team
hosted its ninth annual Leadership Day, Friday,
May 15, 2009, at The Midland Company in Amelia,
OH. As with years before, the event
centers on leadership development, business
productivity, and community involvement.
This year's program featured keynote
speaker and Cincinnati author Peter Block and the focus
was healthy leadership. Several studies have
concluded that healthy employees are happier and more
productive. Breakout sessions include mental
wellness, physical health, goal achievement, and healthy
buildings.
The Project Pavilion displayed this
year's class projects: Clermont for Kids; Sauls Homeless
Shelter Awareness; Clermont Historical Collaboration;
Youth Sports; Sustainable Clermont, and the LIVE Book
Drive.

Clermont
Connections Young Professionals Celebrate First
Year |
| |
 |
Clermont Connections Young Professionals celebrated
their first year as an organization May 18, 2009 after
being developed as a LEAD Project in the Class of
2008. The group is focused on creating awareness
about the potential young professionals offer and also
by getting engaged in economic and community building
efforts. At the end of its first year,
CCYP counted approximately 100 young professionals
representing 35 companies and organizations in Clermont
County. "I think the CCYP did an outstanding job of
making itself visible to people in its first year," said
Andy McCreanor, Executive Director, Clermont 20/20, Inc.
"They're a sincere group of people and want to get
involved with what's going on around them. They've got
talent and are looking to apply their skills in ways
that match their interests and passion," he
said. Dave McNutt, CCYP Advisor and
Senior Vice President of the Midland Company, commented
"To see the progress from just "concept" to what this
group has become today is a credit to the young
professionals in Clermont County. I strongly
encourage organizations in the area to continue and even
build on their support to make CCYP even better than
what it is today!!!" Julie Graybill, CCYP
Chairperson and Manager of Membership Services at the
Clermont Chamber of Commerce, said, "Clermont
Connections offers a great inlet for any young
professional who would like to become more engaged in
the Clermont County community, develop their leadership
and professional skills and also build a network of
their peers. We have many exciting plans for the
remainder of 2009. This is a great time to become
involved with this up and coming group. The young
professionals in Clermont County are the future leaders
of this community that is why it is important for us to
start taking the initiative to become engaged in the
economic and community building efforts of the
county. This is a great opportunity we are being
given." Interested in knowing more about

Clermont
20/20 is going, going, gone
Paperless |
|
|
 |
Go
Paperless!
Get a bank account with on-line bill pay. Receive
your bills and statements by e-mail. Direct deposit your
paycheck. For this small change in habit, you can have a
positive environmental impact. At Clermont
20/20, we've undertaken the initiative of going as
paperless as possible with an objective of becoming 100%
paperless by the end of 2009. Our event
notices, invitations, correspondence and the
dissemination of priceless information will be
communicated only by email, unless you do not have email
and then of course we will communicate by phone and
snail mail. This effort will include reports and other
internal uses for paper that can be reduced or
eliminated through better management of technology, data
and information. We encourage online
registration as much as possible. If you need an
invoice, I would like to be able to send it to you
electronically. Consumers receiving electronic bills and
statements and making payments electronically can
maintain tighter control over accounts in real time.
Almost 85 percent of identity theft cases are due to
"offline" transactions such as lost checkbooks and
stolen bills, statements, and check
payments. It's a little effort that will go
a long way. Frankie Hughart Office

The Wayne
Factor: A Final Tribute to Wayne
Baughman
By Andy McCreanor, Executive Director, Clermont
20/20, Inc.
I haven't quite figured out whether
to describe the Wayne Factor as Gut Check Time, the
Ideal of the Quality of Life, or a Citizen's Courage.
Any one of these could have described Wayne Baughman. It
could also be as the Community Journal headline said in
a recent edition...."Baughman Helped People
Achieve". When I came to Clermont 20/20 in
October of last year, I was aware of Wayne's cancer but
did not know to what extent the disease affected him. In
a matter of a day or two, Wayne was very open about
telling me how things were, how he and Linda were
approaching the battle, how he was hopeful to complete
this year's class, and that he and I could talk about
his condition freely. He wanted to be sure that he took
care of his responsibilities for leadership development
at 20/20 and assured me that at the end of the day, he
would do what was right for the program and the class.
From that day forward I never had a concern about where
Wayne's head was or how he would approach his job. I
told him that whatever this "thing" became for him, we
would work together to deliver on our promise to our
customers while helping him shoulder the workload that
had to be managed. He did it very well and with
style. As an example, he made sure that all
of the program material, agendas, planning outlines,
class membership rosters, class speakers, etc., were
organized and kept in a technical assistance manual....
"So"....as Wayne put it...."It could serve as a
blueprint for whoever came after him." Another example
of Wayne's commitment was when I went to visit Wayne and
Linda on Monday May 4th. Linda reviewed 5 pages of notes
that she and Wayne had constructed over the previous
weekend about the leadership programs. It included
things that had to be done and what was happening in the
programs over the next 60-90 days. This was typical
Wayne as I came to know him better as a co-worker. He
was quick to think of others first and served people
with consideration and courtesy. Without
saying, we will all miss Wayne in a variety of ways and
most of all for his wit, sincerity, and humanity. And
that's the way I'll end with what I think The Wayne
Factor describes: It's a person with courage who
confronts conflict head-on. It's a person who has an
ideal when it comes to the Quality of Life and is
prepared to help others achieve it. Finally, it's a
person whose legacy will be remembered because it
involved serving people. Thanks
Wayne. |

Nonprofits tell
United Way they are experiencing shortages of diapers.
The average monthly cost of diapers runs between $60 and
$100, depending on a child's age, according to United
Way. Local health professionals are concerned
because some impoverished families are being forced to
choose between food and diapers and are re-using
diapers. "The Give 5" campaign is asking
citizens to donate $5 and pass the information to five
friends. Proceeds will go to the Freestore
Foodbank, which will distribute money to 16 non-profits
for diapers. The goal is to raise $100,000 the money by
June 21. All donations can be made online at
www.uwgc.org/give5. (click on the "Please Give 5"
icon in the middle of the page). You can use all
major credit cards.
