Leadership: Bridging Economic and Community Development

Andy McCreanor
Executive Director

Leadership is vital to almost everything we do in our lives as citizens. We all lead somebody or something during our lifetime whether we realize it or not. Today, in this 21st Century, we're part of things like globalization, nano-seconds, virtual reality, and speed which occupy much of our time as we work constantly to find ways to take advantage of technology and new ideas.

Importantly, leadership is fundamental to creating jobs, strong communities, profitable companies, and proactive government. While globalization and competing in world markets get the top of the news coverage today, bridging economic and community development at a local and regional level requires leadership with vision and a partnership attitude. There was a time when economic and community development were considered to be separate and distinct areas in terms of how they were applied to people and places.

Today, public-private partnerships, collaboratives, strategic alliances and participation from the business, government, education and other sectors in our society recognize that we do need to work hand-in-hand if we're truly to have quality neighborhoods, strong job creating industries, an educated and talented workforce, and ultimately, a tax base that will sustain growth and provide futures for the next generations of citizens.

Don't misunderstand the point about leadership bridging economic and community development. It's not a new phenomenon. There's always been leadership in one form or another that has wrestled with how to best achieve economic growth and build prosperous communities. It's the dynamics of our needs and desires today that dictate what new strategies should be applied. To that end, leadership today has to be evolutionary (maybe even revolutionary) and more inclusive and diverse at the same time. The challenge is to keep our eye on the horizon and steer in a focused direction.

It's not easy to do but that's why leadership is so vital to the process. People are counting on us to lead.

Leadership Day
Friday, May 15th, 2009

Clermont 20/20, Inc. will be hosting its ninth annual Leadership Day, Friday, May 15, 2009, at The Midland Company in Amelia, OH.   As with years before, the event is organized by LEAD Clermont and centers on leadership development, business productivity, and community involvement.  However, this year the event is also sponsored by Leadership Warren County and Clinton County Leadership Institute.

This year's program will feature keynote speaker and Cincinnati author Peter Block and will focus on healthy leadership.  Several studies have concluded that healthy employees are happier and more productive.  Breakout sessions include mental wellness, physical health, goal achievement, and healthy buildings.
This event is open to the public and has already attracted attention from local community and business leaders, as well as anyone interested in growth, productivity, and healthy leadership.

To register for Leadership Day, or to learn more about Clermont 20/20 and LEAD Clermont, visit Clermont 20/20's web site at www.clermont2020.org. Clermont 20/20 is a non-profit organization that focuses on leadership, development, and community involvement.

Tons of Material Collected!
Tons of litter, debris, and used computers were kept out of local landfills thanks to Clermont 20/20 Clean and Green volunteers and computer donations received by Cincinnati Computer Cooperative in Miami Township.

694 volunteers removed 1,051 bags of litter, 153 bags of material that could be recycled and numerous miscellaneous items such as tires, propane tanks, and car parts. 119 businesses and individuals donated over 7 tons of computer equipment, some of which will be refurbished and reused with the rest being recycled!

The weather cooperated and we had a great volunteer turnout for the Clean and Green Spring Litter Pickup - Great American Cleanup.

We would like to thank Julie Wartman, Travis Dotson, Rex Parsons, Connie Taggart, Lou Clemons, Susan Ellerhorst, Alison Burnam, Kim Beuke, Teresa Brown, Doug Snyder, Mary Ann Lefker and Mark McIlrath for serving as Community Captains at our staging areas.  They spent countless hours preparing and worked very hard the day of the event.

We would also like to thank Miami Township for hosting the computer recycling event. The Cincinnati Computer Cooperative not only recycles computers, like other for-profit computer recyclers in the Greater Cincinnati area, they also reuse computers through their refurbishing program.  Hundreds of computers are made available to schools, non-profits, students, and families on assistance.  Last year 20 percent of donated equipment was sold to groups, families, and individuals for under $100 a piece.

The following sponsors made this event possible:
  • Adams-Clermont Solid Waste District
  • Keep Cincinnati Beautiful
  • Ohio Department of Natural Resources
  • Duke Energy

Life Under a Microscope

I am amazed that some leaders and managers think they can 'do their thing' and no one will notice.  The actual situation is that people who work for leaders and managers have them under a microscope 24-7, watching everything they say and do.  Subsequently, as soon as a leader or manager does anything inconsistent with what they said they were going to do, it is immediately noticed, and a 'chink in the armor' becomes apparent.  With the 'chink in the armor' comes a loss of trust and respect.  Exacerbating this situation is the fact that as soon as the 'chink in the armor' appears, the word spreads like wildfire as everyone discusses it.

Therefore, if you are a leader or manager, you are the model, all the time, in all circumstances.  Thinking you can 'get away' with some inconsistency is foolhardy.

Our Compliments to Google!
1-800-GOOG411

Here's a number worth putting in your cell phone, or your home phone speed dial! Don't waste your money on information calls and don't waste your time manually dialing the number.

I am driving along in my car, I need to call Clermont 20/20, and I don't know the number. I hit the speed dial for information that I have programmed.
The voice at the other end says, "City & State."
I say, "Cincinnati, Ohio."
He says, "Business Name or Type of Service."
I say, "Clermont 20/20."
He says, "Connecting" and Clermont 20/20 answers the phone.  How great is that?

This is nationwide! When GOOG-411 connects to the business, since it's a toll-free number you shouldn't incur charges when calling from a landline.

However, some mobile carriers treat toll-free numbers just like any other number, so a call to GOOG-411 and connections to any businesses may deduct from the minutes in your cell phone plan. You should check with your carrier to see if toll-free numbers use up your minutes.

Watch the short clip on the Google web site for a quick demonstration of the system:  http://www.google.com/goog411.
