Celebrate Earth Day by Keeping Clermont County
Clean and Green |
| |
 |
Becky
Ploucha Coordinator, Clean and Green
Program
Earth Day worldwide will be celebrated on April
22nd. This global initiative was simply promoted in the
New York Times on Sunday, November 30th, 1969 in an
article by Gladwin Hill "A national day of observance of
environmental problems is being planned for next spring
when a nationwide environmental 'teach in' coordinated
from the offices Senator Gaylord Nelson is being
planned." stated Hill. The first Earth Day was organized
in 1970 in an effort to promote environmental
citizenship worldwide. Millions of demonstrators and
thousands of schools and communities participated. This
year, organizers are preparing for the biggest Earth Day
ever! In Clermont County, we are
celebrating Earth Day on Saturday, April 18th and
Saturday, April 25th from 9am - Noon. Clermont
County Earth Day celebrations began 12 years ago with
the very first spring litter pickup and Roadside Rainbow
event organized by Clermont 20/20, Inc. Litter and
debris was removed from roadsides in Clermont County and
in its place thousands of daffodil bulbs were planted!
We feel, just like other Earth Day event organizers,
ours will be the biggest and best yet! There will
be at least 14 different staging areas in Clermont
County where volunteers can register and pickup safety
equipment and litter collection supplies.
Recyclables will be separated from the rest of the
litter and recycled it appropriately. T-shirts and
refreshments will be available while they last for all
of our hardworking volunteers. I would
like to thank our major contributors for making this
year's spring litter pickup possible: Adams Clermont
Solid Waste District, Keep Cincinnati Beautiful, United
Dairy Farmers, Allscreen, Duke Energy, H.J Benkens
Florist and Greenhouse, Kamphaus, Henning and Hood CPA,
Ace Hardware-Withamsville and Murphy Supply Company in
West Chester. We really couldn't do it without
you! But ... I am looking forward to the
day that this event is no longer needed. I am
looking forward to the day when passengers traveling
though Clermont County are astonished by just how clean,
green and litter free our county is. I am looking
forward to the day that residents realize that littering
of any sort is not socially acceptable in Clermont
County. I am looking forward to the day that it is
easier to enforce current litter laws. Yes, I am
looking forward to the day that I have worked myself
right out of a job!

Computer
Recycling Event
When:
Saturday, April 18,
2009 9 am -
Noon
Where:
Computers can be dropped off at the
Miami Township Service Department located at 5900
McPicken Drive. Please enter off of Meijer Drive, right
next to the Dairy Queen.
This is a great opportunity for any
Clermont County resident or business to drop off a
computer free of charge that they are no longer
using. When possible, used computers are
refurbished, the hard drives are erased and software is
reloaded. These computers then end up in schools,
churches, not for profit organizations and families that
ordinarily could not afford a computer. Computers
that cannot be refurbished and reused are completely
recycled and the hard drives crushed. Reusing or
recycling computers prevents thousands of pounds of
toxic electronic waste from going into our local
landfills. This event is organized by the
Clermont 20/20 Clean and Green Program and the
Cincinnati Computer Cooperative. Both organizations
would like to thank the Miami Township elected officials
and administration for graciously hosting this
event.
The Clermont 20/20 Clean and Green
Program is funded by the Adams-Clermont Solid Waste
District.

On Monday, June 22, 2009, Clermont 20/20, Inc. will
host its annual golf scramble at Legendary Run Golf
Course. This is always an incredible day of fun
and networking opportunities thanks to the hard work and
dedication of individuals throughout Clermont County who
graciously volunteer their time to serve on the Golf
Scramble Committee. This event serves as Clermont
20/20's primary fundraiser for the
year. We are currently seeking
volunteers to serve on this committee for our outing
this summer. As a member of
the team, you will work with others on the committee to:

the event through hole sponsorship and foursome
participation.

opportunity to support this event that will raise "fun"
and "funds" in Clermont County. If you are
interested in serving on the 2009 Golf Scramble
Committee please contact me at 753-9222 or by email at
officemgr@clermont2020.org. Our

Foundation Tackles Economic
Downturn GCF Commits $1M, Raises
Additional Dollars from Foundations, Corporations and
Individuals
The The Greater Cincinnati Foundation (GCF) today
announced a strategic community-wide response to the
economic crisis. The Foundation has committed a minimum
of $1 million, gathered other funders to commit more
than $800,000 and has invited individual donors to join
in the effort. Funds will be used to
address two distinct facets of the economic crisis:
security and stability for families, and support and
stability for nonprofits. To date, the
following funders are participating:
- The Butler Foundation
- Christ Church Cathedral
- The Carol Ann and Ralph V. Haile Jr./U.S. Bank
Foundation
- The Health Foundation of Greater Cincinnati
- The Andrew Jergens Foundation
- Macy's
- The Mayerson Foundation
- PNC Bank
- Procter & Gamble Fund of GCF
- William Cooper Procter Fund
- Scripps Howard Foundation
- United Way of Greater Cincinnati
- Women's Fund of GCF
- Craig Young Family Foundation
A strategy to stabilize families who have lost jobs
is to provide assistance in the following areas: hunger
prevention and food security; foreclosure and eviction
protection; individual and family counseling; employment
counseling, training and placement; Earned Income Tax
Credit filing and public benefits enrollment; and child
care. It's also important to stabilize
nonprofits that contribute significantly to our region's
quality of life. Many are experiencing deep declines in
contributions and earned revenue such as ticket sales.
Support will be provided to help stabilize a limited
number of key nonprofits in the region that make the
greatest impact in their respective arenas by addressing
short-term funding gaps. "Obviously our
community's needs are much greater than we can address
with these funds, and so we are opening up participation
to the community," said Kathryn E. Merchant,
President/CEO of GCF. "We invite any individual who
would like to contribute to the Weathering the Economic
Storm Fund to visit our Web site to learn
more." "We urge everyone who has the
capacity to give of your time, talent or treasure to use
your resources to help our region weather this economic
storm," she added.

Leadership Moments |

Effective Leadership
- Create constancy and purpose on an on-going basis
so everyone knows why and what they are doing.
- Teach all to adapt to change, and work to keep
ahead of change, because change needs to happen to
ensure quality.
- Stop micro managing quality; instead, build
quality self-assessment into the process and company
culture.
- Build on long term relationships vs. going with
the lowest priced person.
- Commit to daily improvement, with an understanding
that this is an on-going process that never ends.
- Institute job training and on-going professional
development.
- Offer leadership development; do not assume
promotions make leaders.
- Remove all fear from the organization.
- Remove and break down any barriers between groups
within the company.
- Eliminate targets from the workforce; they need to
be driven by the employees, not management.
- Eliminate numerical goals for production; instead,
work on developing methods for improving production
and quality.
- Eliminate barriers that removed workmanship pride.
- Institute a program of company-wide self
improvement and development.
- Develop company-wide action plans that involve
every employee, with the goal of creating a
company-wide transformation to quality.
These are the fourteen critical factors that W.
Edwards Deming created (professionally accepted
philosopher and process developer).

Milford Drug-Free Coalition Community
Forum
Thursday, April
23, 2009 Miami Township Civic
Center
The Partners for a Drug-Free Milford-Miami Township
will be hosting a Community Forum at 6:00 pm on April
23rd in the Mulberry Room at the Miami Township Civic
Center. The Civic Center is located at 6101 Meijer
Drive. Dinner will be provided. The
Partnership is a group of 23 parents, business leaders,
school and governmental officials, and students
dedicated to combating substance abuse in Milford Junior
and Senior High. In February of this year, the
Partnership distributed a survey to the community to
determine the extent and concerns related to drug,
alcohol, and tobacco abuse among Milford and Miami
Township teens. The results were used to direct
discussion at the March 4 Youth Summit. This
day-long event was attended by approximately 70 randomly
selected 7th through 12th graders.
The Youth Summit was tremendously
successful. The teens gave honest and detailed
accounts of the benefits and challenges of living in the
area. They also provided insight into the
attitudes toward alcohol, tobacco, marijuana, and
illegal drug use and abuse among local
students. Finally, the participants provided
insightful suggestions as to what would and would not
work in curbing substance abuse among teens.
The April 23rd Forum is an
opportunity for these students to tell parents and the
community what is really going on in Milford and Miami
Township. It will also allow the teens to convey
community-specific suggestions for tackling substance
abuse. If you are
interested in participating in the Community Forum,
please call 831-1314 or 576-4141 to R.S.V.P, or e-mail
at dobbs_d@milfordschools.org.
