2009: A Year for
Leadership
Welcome to the New Year and good riddance to 2008!
The past year was one of the most difficult years in our
history in terms of the economic, political, and global
issues we confront. Leadership or the lack of it is
cited as the main culprit for the dilemmas that have
wreaked havoc on taxpayers, wrecked industries,
increased the potential for double-digit unemployment,
and created wonder in all of us as to how and when we
will overcome these
challenges. Interestingly, Leadership is
the impetus that is needed to provide the pathways for
recovery and restoring confidence in ourselves and our
political and free enterprise system. So what have we
learned about leadership and its value to our way of
life? First, leadership is indispensible
to creating opportunity and overcoming obstacles whether
it is in the political system or the business
sector. Second, leadership requires a constant
commitment of doing the right thing to the best of our
ability. Third, leadership does not control all of the
elements that would make an issue or result easier to
manage. Fourth, leadership means understanding that not
everyone is going to like or agree with the leader. With
these things in mind, leaders have to find ways to be
flexible, strategic, collaborative, and above all
caring. People look to their leaders for
reassurance and to provide a sense of direction for them
when things get tough. We look to leadership for
stability and hope so we can enjoy the things we want
for ourselves and families. Unfortunately, these
transitions and transformations we endure are not
without pain and distress. However, solid leadership can
help minimize the impact that is felt and get us into a
better environment more quickly. The good news is
throughout our history, we have found the leaders and
the ways to meet our challenges and overcome them.
Leadership in 2009 has its work cut out
for itself. We have to stay focused on getting ourselves
on track and diligent about following through on our
responsibilities to others. We also need to invest in
developing leadership depth and perspectives at all
levels in our organizations so the best talent and best
practices find their way into creating opportunity and
sustainable solutions. Leadership is not
easy, but it is necessary. Be strong. Best wishes for a
successful 2009! Andy

LEAD Clermont Class Conducts "Green"
Survey |
| |
 |
Calling all Clermont County village and township
administrators! Have you implemented energy efficiency
or other green initiatives for your local government
offices or facilities? Do you know what items can be
recycled in Clermont County? These are just a couple of
questions that will be included on a Clermont County
Sustainability Survey currently being prepared by the
2009 LEAD Clermont Class - Sustainability Clermont
Team. Sustainability Clermont Team members include
Bonnie Batchler, Pierce Township Trustee, Marvin Blade,
Duke Energy, and David Jones of Clark, Schaefer, Hackett
and Company. Connie O'Connor, Cincinnati Nature
Center - Rowe Woods, has acted as the team's advisor,
giving direction and support to the initiative.
Team members worked closely with Paul Braasch, Clermont
County Office of Environmental Quality and Tom Rocklin,
Siemens PLM Software, in creating a 10 question online
survey that can be completed conveniently through Survey
Monkey. "The team's goal is to identify
sustainable best practices in Clermont County and create
a baseline from which to work from. The next steps
include identifying gaps and possible solutions such as
public awareness of existing recycling initiatives or
creating greater access to information on green
buildings, green purchasing, etc., based on the survey
results. Efforts like these continue to make
Clermont County a great place to live, work and play not
only for us bur for future generations." Marvin Blade of
Duke Energy stated. "I am anxious to see
the results!" exclaimed Becky Ploucha, Director of the
Clermont 20/20 Clean and Green Program. "Survey
results will potentially give our program direction for
the future. We are hoping for a high response to the
survey so we can get a strong indication of how Clermont
20/20 can be a catalyst for energy efficiency and
address environmental concerns in Clermont County."
Ploucha added. Surveys will be emailed
before the end of January 2009. For
information about the Clermont 20/20 Leadership
Development Programs, please contact Wayne Baughman at
513-753-9222 or leadership@clermont2020.org. For

The Five Laws of Stratospheric
Success
- The Law of Value - your true worth is determined
by how much more you give in value than you take in
payment.
- The Law of Compensation - your income is
determined by how many people you serve and how well
you serve them.
- The Law of Influence - your influence is
determined by how abundantly you place other people's
interests first.
- The Law of Authenticity - the most valuable gift
you have to offer is yourself.
- The Law of Receptivity - the key to effective
giving is to stay open to receiving.

(2007). The go-giver: a little story about a
powerful business idea. New York: The Penguin Group.
Understanding What Really
Matters
Here are a few dos and don'ts that will help in your
lifelong quest to understand what really matters.
- First, regardless of your field, adopt a
straightforward vision of what you want to do...and
how you want to do it. Make it actionable and easy to
understand.
- Second, don't get caught up in the fad theory of
the day. Stay focused on the fundamentals and apply
them rigorously and across the board. They may seem
trite and rival; they usually turn out to be
profoundly important.
- Third, avoid a one-size-fits-all approach to
problem solving. Templates work within limits; they do
not travel widely with the same effect. Study each
situation carefully and make sure the solution
custom-fits the problem.
- And fourth, just because something worked in the
past does not mean it will work in the future. Things
change, nowadays very quickly and fundamentally. So
beware that superficial similarities aren't hiding
some deep differences.

J.M. (2007). Doing what matters: how to get results
that make a difference - the revolutionary old-school
approach. New York: Crown Business.
Comfort Zones
Discomfort always signals growth.
Life begins at the edge of your comfort zone.
The French poet-philosopher Guillaume
Apollinaire wrote: Come to the edge. We
can't. We are afraid. Come to the edge. We
can't. We will fall! Come to the edge And they
came And he pushed them And they flew
Your comfort zone is very familiar to you. But
just outside of it, is your Discovery Zone. You'll
discover marvelous things about yourself if you take a
few steps out of your comfort
zone. Reference: Robinson, M.
(2007). Your own magic for getting what you
want. Victoria, BC, Canada: Trafford
Publishing.
