The Value of Leadership:
Delivering Commitment, Gaining
Benefits
When did you know that you would become a leader?
Was it something that happened one day and all of a
sudden you realized that someone was willing to follow
you? Regardless of when it happened, the fact is our
world needs leaders at all levels and of all styles.
That's why leadership development and leadership
networking are necessary. The value of leadership is
best evidenced by how one generation of people helps the
next generation face the challenges of living in this
world, which is full of challenges. Whether it's on a
global basis or in our local community, individuals who
are willing to assume a leadership role can make a
difference in the lives of people. Identifying
individuals who are willing to make the commitment of
becoming engaged in civic and business issues, requires
that leadership programs provide the development and
support in order to make leadership
sustainable. This is the value of
leadership. It's a critical part of the capital
resources available on this earth that need to be
nurtured and applied. Leadership development and
networking are important guiding principles of Clermont
20/20's mission. We're constantly searching for
individuals who not only can deliver the commitment of
leadership, but who are also interested in the benefits
leadership development and networking provide. Here are
just a few of them. Individuals who enter this
leadership fraternity instantly have access to a network
of leaders with whom they can share thoughts and ideas
and give and get direction. This leadership network is
also a quick way of knowing who's interested in joining
the effort of making our community a better place by
applying their talent and skill. I often
say this. "In the great continuum of life we're here for
only a short time. I believe our purpose for being here
has to include making our world better for those who
come after us." I can tell you without hesitation that
my personal leadership development and networking has
helped me fulfill this purpose. How about
you? |

Below is a piece that we would like to share with
you. It is written by Tom Rocklin, Lead Class of 2000.
We asked Tom to be a guest speaker for LEAD graduation
class of 2008. He addresses our network of leaders with
whom he has shared thoughts and ideas. "Thank you
Tom for allowing us to share this!"
Address to Leadership
Graduates Class of 2008 By Tom Rocklin - Lead Class
of 2000
With memories of the Camp Joy ropes course still
vivid in your mind, you are ready to move beyond your
"student" status in the Leadership
Program. I'm certain you've learned more
about Clermont County than you expected. What a
marvelous place we have to live and work and grow!
The businesses and agencies in this area - and the
individuals who make them real living entities - are
notes in the chords of the unfinished symphony that is
Clermont County. Through your experiential
learning process, you discovered some things that need
attention. Parts of this symphony are a little out
of tune or perhaps out of rhythm - some aren't in place
yet - some take a long time to
complete. You were already a leader making
a difference when you started your class this past
year. As part of your curriculum, you focused your
energy on one of the needy areas in our county. I
saw the LEAD class project presentations on Leadership
Day. As one of your fellow citizens, I sincerely
thank you for your work. On your class
days, you connected with your team, and you also
connected with some of the alumni - members of this
Graduate Network of Leaders. This is not an
organization. It is a network of communication and
cooperation - it's all about connections. At the
risk of bragging a bit, I'd like to share some of my
personal experiences. My first exposure
to this network was when my son Joe - a graduate of the
Look to Clermont Class of 1999 - approached me for some
help and advice on his project - A Senior Prom - a dance
for the senior members of our community. That same
year, my business colleague Chuck Lawrence from the 1999
LEAD Class invited me to be a speaker for his class
day. At that time, the Leadership program was
under the direction of Cindy Jenkins ('96) with Bill
Over at the helm. As part of my project in
the LEAD Class of 2000 (the best LEAD class that year),
we drew upon the resources of several graduates - Jean
Schmidt ('93) who was a Miami Township Trustee at the
time, Sheriff Rodenberg ('98), Clermont County Auditor
Linda Fraley ('99), and many others - to help complete
our class days and guide our projects. My group's
project was the development of the Clermont 20/20 web
site. After I graduated, I worked with Ed
Humphrey ('01) and Steve Young ('01) on the Technology
Committee to define and implement some updates needed
for the Clermont 20/20 operations. I still help
out with the web site, and my son Joe and I provide
occasional technical support, with help from others like
Greg Shivener ('05) from Clermont Senior
Services. As a member of the SEM Haven
Foundation Fund Committee for the Nursing Home in
Milford, I called upon my classmate, Joe Schuch ('00)
and Karen Zerhusen ('02) to help with SEM Haven's
interaction with the Greater Cincinnati
Foundation. Last year, at the request of Chuck
Fink ('07), I became a member of the Advisory Board for
the Clermont Community Fund of the Greater Cincinnati
Foundation. Several years ago, at the
request of Doug Ackerman and Dan Stacy ('97), I joined
the Board of Directors of the Literacy Council of
Clermont and Brown Counties. Two year's ago, Linda
Fraley ('99) volunteered to become one of our literacy
tutors. Our Executive Director is Susan Vilardo,
graduating in your LEAD class of 2008. Her mother,
Mary Sue Vilardo (Senior Leadership '07) is one of our
tutors. A couple years ago at the request
of George Brown ('94), I joined the Clermont Senior
Services Board, and in those meetings I sit with
individuals like Ed Nurre ('94), Andy McCreanor ('97),
Sheriff Rodenberg and Jim McDonough ('98), and Barb
Burke (Senior Leadership '98) who also happened to be my
son Joe's 4th grade teacher. My boss
at Siemens, John Crowley, graduated with the LEAD class
of 2006 - his brother Bob Crowley from Midland graduated
in 2002, and Bob's colleague at Midland, Alisa Poe
graduating in your LEAD class of 2008, who was my
colleague at SDRC several years ago. Every
month I join Joe Moon ('07), as we meet with his boss
Dan Cox ('04), R. J. Vilardo in your Senior Leadership
class of 2008, Julie Graybill in your LEAD class of
2008, and others on the Live Oaks Business Advisory
Council as we work to enhance the experience of the
students on the Live Oaks campus. And
the list goes on - for all the graduates. The
network is strong. It works for us as individuals,
as family members, as participating leaders in our
businesses and agencies. It helps us connect with
the resources we need to make a difference - with
opportunities to give and opportunities to
receive. Communication and cooperation are,
of course, keys to effective leadership. The
Graduate Network of Leaders focuses on these keys.
The Clermont 20/20 web site and the eVisions electronic
newsletter are part of that, and Leadership Day provides
a great opportunity to directly interface with graduates
and next year's classes. In a recent Bible
study at my church, my pastor reminded us that "unity"
begins with u-n-i - or you and I. We want you to
stay connected to this Graduate Network of Leaders - for
your leadership growth, and - together - to improve the
quality of life in Clermont County. So let's stay
in touch. Keep us up to date with your contact
information - especially that dynamic email
address. We have no caps and gowns - no
tassels - but you have been given a pin. You may
not wear it very much (I often forget where I put
mine...), but it is meant to commemorate your
achievement and your transition into the Graduate
Network of Leaders.
- - - - -
As a graduate from a Clermont 20/20,
Inc. leadership program, if you have an announcement you
would like to share with fellow alum, please send your
information to officemgr@clermont2020.org.
This effort is brought to
you by the LEAD Class of
2008.

LIVE Clermont Sees Education Up
Front |
| by Wayne Baughman |
 |
The LIVE Clermont class of Clermont 20/20, recently
spent some time visiting the Grant Career Center in
Bethel. One participant said, "The Grant Career
Center is a very positive environment. The staff
seemed to be very enthusiastic." The mission of
the Grant Career Center, which the participants of the
LIVE Clermont leadership program found out is to prepare
youth and adults with the necessary employability
practices and the technical skills to become productive
and capable citizens academically ready to purse
continuing educational opportunities. Ken Kappel,
Principal, Grant Career Center gave an overview of the
school and the programs that are being offered and Pam
McKinney, PR Director, took the group on a tour of the
facility. Another participant said, "I was
impressed with the condition of the building."
The class also heard from Neil Leist,
Superintendent, CNE School District about creative ways
he and his staff are going to save money during budget
reductions and about Ohio's Standards Based Curriculum
from Stan Laferty, Improvement Coordinator, Clermont Co.
Educational Service Center.
To find out more about the LIVE Clermont
leadership program, a program based on the belief that
retirees can offer a wealth of knowledge, experience,
leadership and vitality to our community while enriching
individual lives, contact Wayne Baughman, Leadership
Director, at 513-753-9222 or www.clermont2020.org. |

CNE Welcomes GRASP |
| by Becky Ploucha |
 |
After wrapping up in Williamsburg, the Clermont
20/20 GRASP (Garnering Resources for Access and Success
Partnership) program has been invited to introduce the
program's resources into the school district and
community of Clermont Northeastern.
Educators and administrators are doing an
incredible job of providing resources to CNE students
and parents, and there is excitement in the community
about education and the prospect of building a new high
school. Our goal is to compliment what the school
district is already doing in regards to college access
by providing resources. The Clermont 20/20 GRASP program
is funded through the Greater Cincinnati Foundation
(GCF) and the Ohio College Access Network (OCAN) so
there is no cost to the school district or community.
The motivation behind the partnership of
GRASP is to help identify current best practices of the
partners, develop new ones through a collaborative
process, and provide better access, retention, and
graduation services to high school and college students
as well as adults in need. Clermont 20/20 is
pleased to have been the lead organization in forming
this partnership, as well as applying what we've learned
from the success of the program in the pilot school
district, Williamsburg, in Clermont Northeastern.
Clermont 20/20 GRASP program partners
include Clermont 20/20 - Clermont Educational
Opportunities (CEO) College Access Program, Clermont
County Educational Service Center, Great Oaks Institute
of Technology and Career Development, Ohio College Tech
Prep Greater Cincinnati Consortium, Southwest Ohio
Educational Opportunity Center, University of Cincinnati
- Clermont College, TRIO Educational Talent Search (ETS)
and TRIO Upward Bound. For more
information about GRASP please contact Becky Ploucha at

Make a Difference With Your
IRA
New temporary tax benefits allow qualified
individuals to experience the joy of giving more during
their lifetimes. This could be a great opportunity for
you or someone you love! Congress has extended
this provision of the Pension Protection Act of 2006
through 2009. You can give
more for less. For 2008 and 2009, Americans
over age 70 ½ no longer pay federal income tax on
individual retirement account (IRA) funds given to
charity up to $100,000 per person, per year. So your
retirement funds can go farther than ever before
You can make a difference. The
Greater Cincinnati Foundation can help you connect to
the causes you care about most. You can support an
existing fund or establish a new charitable fund in your
name or the name of a loved one. Giving is one of life's
pleasures - we can help you enjoy it today.
Here's how. Transfer IRA assets
into a permanent charitable fund in your name at GCF.
Funds can be placed into "field of interest" or
"designated" funds to help causes you specify, or added
to a permanent endowment used to meet our region's
changing needs, now and in the future. (Congress has
excluded donor advised funds from this provision.)
To learn more, please contact your
professional advisor or a member of GCF's Giving
Strategies Group at (513)
