Stats are In for Spring Litter Pickup

The statistics are in for the Clermont 20/20 Clean and Green Spring Litter Pickup! A total of 661 volunteers removed 1,164 bags of litter, 159 bags of material that will be recycled and miscellaneous items that included 40 tires, a hot water heater, freezer, refrigerator and pieces of a boat. The most unusual items picked up were the front end of a Pontiac and a mannequin! 17 pallets of donated computer equipment were collected at the Computer Reuse/Recycling event in Miami Township to be reused or recycled by Cincinnati Computer Cooperative.

Total Quality Logistics (TQL) and Duke Energy created corporate teams to participate in the spring litter pick up. Duke Energy provided employees for the Batavia Township, Felicity and Amelia staging areas. The Duke Energy - Hamlet site actually created its own staging area and had 100% employee participation!

A HUGE thank you to the following sponsors: Adams Clermont Solid Waste District, Ohio Department of Natural Resources, Duke Energy Foundation, Clermont County Convention and Visitors Bureau, Wal- Mart Milford, Keep Cincinnati Beautiful, Batavia Rotary Club, United Dairy Farmers and Kamphaus, Henning and Hood CPA. We really couldn't do it without you!

Congratulations to the Look to Clermont Class of 2008!

Look to Clermont Class of 2008 Project Teams

Children's Cheer Packages - This team created care packages to deliver to children staying in local hospitals. The goal was to let children know that they're cared about and to bring comfort to them during their difficult times. The team solicited donations of comfort and activity items from area businesses and individuals. They put together 31 cheer packages for children who are in medical care settings and delivered them to Mercy Hospital Clermont to be given to children who have to spend time in the emergency room. Team: Kristine Crouthers, Chelsea Davis, Rebekah Lavin, Desiree' Lehn, Randi Sinclair

A Walk to Encourage - This team wanted to improve the awareness of Cerebral Palsy. They chose this project because one of the team members babysits for a boy with cerebral palsy. Their goal was to raise $1,000 for United Cerebral Palsy. To do this, they had a walk at Miami Meadows on April 5, 2008 and raised over $2,000! $2,300 to be exact! Team: Rob Abner, Joe Breuer, Debra Forsee, Teresa Schellhause

The House of Peace Baskets - The goal of this project was to collect personal care items for the YWCA House of Peace Shelter and to make people smile. The team solicited donations from individuals, churches, and local businesses. They filled 16 laundry baskets with personal care and household items and delivered them to the women at the shelter over Easter weekend. They also collected and assembled gift bags of Easter candy and toys for the children who are staying there! Team: Robyn Corbin, Karli Dwyer, Richard Godby, Stephanie Howes, Sara Middleton

Wild Friday - This team helped the parents and kids at the Thomas A. Wildey School. The Wild Friday program provides parents with an opportunity for a night out together, and gives the kids a chance to have fun and interact with others. The team solicited gift certificates from local restaurants and on Friday, April 11, 2008, as the parents dropped off their kids, they gave each one a gift certificate for dinner. While the parents were out enjoying their meal the team did various activities with the kids! Team: Kelly Dorsey, Jesi Herren, Rachel Rees, Graham Rose, Tyler Sanders, Emily Webb

Clermont Beautification - This team got involved by assisting Clean and Green of Clermont 20/20 in the Spring Litter Pickup. They marketed and promoted the event in their four communities and on Saturday, April 19, 2008 their communities showed an increase in their number of volunteers and in the amount of debris removed in their community! Team: Olivia Enriquez, Steven Hoover, Elizabeth Little, Aaron Ray

Students Try Future Lifestyle at Real Money, Real World

As adults, we all work hard to make our monthly income cover the necessities and still have a little left over at the end of the month. Wouldn't it be great if we could have had a "trial run" at adult spending decisions while we were still young and able to choose our future career? That was the idea behind inviting forty-one students to participate in Real Money, Real World, a program supported by Clermont 20/20, Inc. and OSU Extension.

For the second year in a row, students who are enrolled in Clermont 20/20's High School Mentoring Program which is offered under the Clermont Educational Opportunities college access program traveled to UC Clermont College on Tuesday April 15, 2008 to take part in this simulation. The purpose was to promote postsecondary education by getting the students onto a college campus and provide an interactive financial simulation of a life scenario. The students were also given a campus tour, lunch and string backpacks compliments of Blaine Kelley, Director of Enrollment Services at UC Clermont College. Several students commented that this was a real eye opener and they definitely learned the value of a dollar. It also solidified their ideas of graduating from high school and pursuing higher education after graduation.

Philanthropy Corner - A History of Harmony

When asked to describe Marty MacVeigh, LEAD Clermont Graduate Class of 1997, her friends say she was a hard worker with an abundance of enthusiasm. It was this enthusiasm that prompted the purchase and restoration of the historic Harmony Hill property in Williamsburg, Ohio.

When Marty passed away in 2003, her husband Gibbs established The Marty MacVeigh Memorial Fund of The Greater Cincinnati Foundation (GCF) as a way to honor her commitment to Harmony Hill. The designated fund of GCF exclusively benefits the property and The Harmony Hill Museum and ensures that Marty's hard work will flourish for many years to come. Lucy Snell, who worked on Harmony Hill with Marty, finds peace of mind in the fund. "I felt that GCF would help us in the long run," she says. "I could see the future of the museum when GCF came into the picture."

The Marty MacVeigh Memorial Fund is affiliated with The Clermont County Family of Funds. For more information on how you can make a difference in Clermont County, please call Chuck Fink at 513-324- 6279.

Leadership Moments

A Crash Course in Adding Value

  1. Tell the truth. Ironically, truth is often so scarce today that we assign an even higher value to it than we did in the past.
  2. Practice personality power. What happens when you extend ourselves to others genuinely and enthusiastically.
  3. Attract through artistry. We increase the value of things when we make them aesthetically pleasing.
  4. Meet needs in advance. Often people forget about the details that need to be taken care of until the very last minute. Anticipating how you can be of service to your neighbors is a magnanimous gesture that will create great value.
  5. Add 'good stuff.' Such as enjoyment to another's day, enthusiasm, and humor.
  6. Subtract 'bad stuff.' Such as waiting, defects, mistakes, irritation and frustration, and misinformation.
  7. Simplify. Make it easier for people to get what they need from you.
  8. Improve. Look for ways, big and small, to improve the quality of your work and interactions with others.
  9. Surprise others. A thoughtful gesture surprises others and lifts their spirits.
  10. Entertain others. People love to be entertained. We pay closer attention, learn faster, and are more engaged when we're entertained.
