- Congratulations Mia Supe, LEAD Clermont Class of 2006
The Clermont County League of Women Voters is proud to announce that Mia Supe
is the winner of the 2005 Orpha Gatch Citizenship Award. Orpha Gatch was an
early suffragette who voted in the first election following the enactment of
the 19th Amendment to the US Constitution granting women the right to vote.
She went on to be one of the first women in Clermont County to be elected to
a public office in 1923 and was a founder of the Clermont County League of
Women Voters in 1958. The Award, named for Orpha Gatch, recognizes a Clermont
County woman for demonstrating that same dedication and perseverance of the
early suffragettes, to their own special cause.
Mia's special cause is supporting our military troops and sailors. Mia began
supporting her brother's Task Force Ironhorse Army unit when he was deployed
to Iraq in April 2003. Her compassion to support these soldiers grew as she
learned many were not receiving letters and support from home. Mia connected
with a few national organizations to seek support from their families. Mia
soon brought the effort to her hometown of Clermont County, seeking support
for her brother's unit and other Clermont County soldiers and sailors. Mia
organizes collections of needed items for the troops and seeks organizations
to cover the shipping costs. Clermont County churches, businesses, schools
and community organizations have participated and continue to assist in
this effort. Initially, packages were sent to 20 soldiers; that list grew
to about 1200 and Mia dedicated herself to seeing these soldiers/sailors
were taken care of. Mia organizes support activities and collection drives
through the year. Cool Aid Relief Drive - for heat relief items during summer
months; Thanksgiving in a Can, special dinners sent for the Holiday; Christmas
Cheer, special mailing to life spirits; Holiday mailings at Valentine's Day,
Easter, Halloween; and a continuous Phone Card Drive.
According to Ron Hartman, Post Commander of the American Legion Post 72 who
nominated Mia for this award, "Mia has a strong love for her Country and a
passion to help our military deployed in war zones. Her enthusiasm, energy,
and patriotism are contagious. Mia gives her time generously and her leadership
and organization abilities further the effectiveness of her support efforts."
Mia and her husband Steve have three children and live in Summerside.
The Leadership Institute congratulates Mia as well as Linda Fraley, Priscilla
O'Donnell and Barbara Burke, also Leadership Institute graduates, and honorees
at the Orpha Gatch Awards Dinner this year. Leadership Institute graduates
who won the Orpha Gatch Citizenship Award in previous years are Martha Dorsey,
Deb Carter-Baker, Cindy Jenkins, and Debbie Siegroth.

- Camp Joy Sizzled
The LEAD Clermont Teambuilding Retreat was hot! The Class of 2006 was on fire with
energy and enthusiasm for their commitment to become more knowledgeable about the
county's critical issues and enhance personal leadership capacity in order to address
the needs of our community. We were almost too hot for a campfire until the
air-conditioned Texas Hold'Em session broke up and Charades kicked in. The new
contenders for "Best Class" status got to know each other quite well in the trees
and on the wall, and as they worked together through initiatives demonstrating the
Five Practices of Exemplary Leaders:
- Model the Way
- Inspire A Shared Vision
- Challenge the Process
- Enable others to Act
- Encourage the Heart
Class members wrapped up the retreat by sharing their own personal visions for a
better Clermont County, and returned home from Camp Joy charged with their class day
planning assignments and project teams. Photos of Camp Joy can be seen in the
Photo Gallery.
