You will be receiving a letter from one of your fellow Leadership Institute graduates asking you to take time to submit a nomination for the upcoming Leadership Institute Classes. The Educational Leadership Class of 2005 will take place June 13 - 17 and is open to Clermont County educators. The Look to Clermont Youth Leadership Class of 2006 will begin with Orientation on April 20 and is open to high school juniors and seniors who hold a 3.0 or higher grade point average and have been recommended by their counselor. Nominees for Senior Leadership Class of 2006 for retired or semi-retired individuals are invited to attend a meeting with the current class on April 28. LEAD Clermont Class of 2006 selections will be finalized by April 15.

  2. Look to Clermont Students learn about Clermont's Unique Heritage
Clermont County is rich in the number of historical sites that can be visited, and Look to Clermont students did just that with local historian, Rick Crawford, for their November class meeting. Some of the things the students found most memorable about the tour were Clermont County's active role in the underground railroad, that the future king of France taught school in Neville, the spiritualist's church in Utopia, Indian torture stories, Rick's jokes, and haunted Clermont County stories.

  3. Senior Leadership learn about Educational Issues
Goshen High School served as host to the Senior Leadership Program for Education Day planned by class members, Phyllis Smith, Tom Cole, and Barb Lindower. The day began with a panel of educators discussing how Clermont County Schools prepare students. We thank Tom Durbin, Superintendent, Williamsburg Local School District, Kay Nau, Principal, Hill Intermediate School, Bethel-Tate District and Matt Smallwood, Classroom Teacher, Goshen High School for being on our panel. The second part of the morning brought together representatives of three entities who work closely with educators to help to guide our youth into productive adulthood. Those representatives were Ann Arbaugh, Deputy Director, Clermont County Children's Protective Services, Doug Brothers, Director of Court Services, Clermont County Juvenile Court, and JT Taylor, School Resource Officer, Goshen Township Police Department. The day was extremely informative and class members were urged to become more active in supporting our schools.

  4. LEAD Clermont explores Pay now or Pay later
The harsh reality of what can happen when a community doesn't provide a good education for students was the focus of LEAD Clermont's Education Day. The average cost to educate a student in public schools is $18.51 per day versus $58.00 per day to educate them in jail. Held at Batavia High School and the County Jail, the day included discussion with Educational Service Center representatives, Stan Laferty on accountability and community support, and Glenn Alexander on school finance, with CNE and Batavia high school students on how students are affected when a levy passes and when a levy fails, and with State Representative, Tom Niehaus on school funding and barriers to making change. Thanks for class members Tami Farmer, Michael Kinner, Greg Shivener and Randy Siler for planning and facilitating Education Day and challenging their class to become more involved in the Educational Issues in Clermont County.
